In 1985, the main Mexican TV company organized a national competition for telenovela writers, in which Blanca de Lizaur participated and for which she was awarded a scholarship to study the telenovela. Thus, in 1986 and 1987 Blanca de Lizaur studied under the guidance of important authors such as Fernanda Villeli, Carlos Olmos, Carlos Tellez and Luis Reyes de la Maza. while --at the same time, pursuing her degree in Hispanic Linguistics and Literatures at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

That's how she came to devote herself to the study of popular literary products –their aesthetics, their social function, their effects on society, their behaviour as commercial products, etc.,as well as to the definition of the telenovela as such, and as a cultural phenomenon.

Her papers and dissertations build a literary theory that allows us to tailor works for a popular consumption, and which accounts to why society needs them to be precisely that way.
