A total of 50 students were tested: 32 in the single-sex school and 18 in the coeducational school. The participants were 16 or 17 years old and of mostly upper-middle socioeconomic level. Data were collected in the 11th grade classrooms in the fall of 1975.

The package of instruments used consisted of four verbal Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cues; the "Who am I?" test, which elicits 10 different open-ended responses to that question; "The Way I Am" and "The Way I Would Like to Be" scales, which are modified Q-sort descriptions of self and ideal self; and finally, a one-page general information questionnaire consisting of short answer questions about age, family, education, and extracurricular activities.
