This dataset is the result of a phone survey set up to measure the impact of COVID-19 on rural people in Senegal. As most governments have urged the population to stay at home to slow down the transmission of the disease, the impact of COVID-19 can affect women and men in different ways: as an income shock (directly or indirectly); as a health and caring shock; as a shock of mobility (affecting access to water, food, firewood, schooling); and as a risk of increased domestic conflict and violence. To capture these various effects on household welfare, this phone survey was conducted with (around) 500 individuals randomly drawn from an existing list of phone numbers collected from previous household surveys. The same individuals were also interviewed during other rounds to generate a longitudinal panel allowing to analyze the impact of COVID-19 through time.

A sample of 500 individuals were randomly drawn from an existing list of phone numbers collected from a recent large representative rural household survey conducted across the country in 2018. This survey focuses on agricultural practices, income changes and food and nutrition security, and knowledge and behavioral responses to COVID-19. Data collected included Feed the Future zones of influence. The sample was purposively oversampled for female-headed households. The first wave of phone survey was conducted in June, 2020 with 500 households. Female-headed households represent 16 percent of the sample. After completion of the survey, phone credit of 1000 FCFA was offered to each household.

The data files in this dataset are unit record or ‘raw’ data files. Information that would allow survey respondents to be identified has been deleted from the files, but all other information remains. IFPRI’s decision not to alter the contents of the data files means that the user of these files will need to take care in handling missing observations, outliers, and violations of logical consistency. </p><p>The data are provided ‘as is’ and in no event shall IFPRI be liable for any damages resulting from the use of the data. While great effort was taken to obtain high-quality data, the accuracy or reliability of the data is not guaranteed or warranted in any way.</p>
