Abstract:

An update of the digital soil property maps for the West of Honduras (Da Silva et al., 2016), including now the center part of the country, was generated at 30 meters of spatial resolution to serve as input for the water-related analysis of the <a href=https://aguadehonduras.gob.hn/ "> “Agua de Honduras”</a> platform. The soil properties mapped presented in this repository are sand (%), silt (%), clay (%), texture class (USDA), and water holding capacity (mm).

Notes:

Methodology: Development of soil property maps was carried out using a digital soil mapping (DSM) approach, which combines different environmental covariates according to soil-forming factors with field soil point data in a mathematical model to produce high-resolution soil maps (raster/pixel-based) (Zhu et al., 2001; McBratney et al., 2003). A dataset of 2385 points from Gonzalez et al. (2008) and 29 environmental covariates was used jointly with a random forest algorithm to predict and map the spatial distribution of sand (%), silt (%), clay (%), organic matter (%) and water holding capacity (mm) at 0-60 cm of soil depth. Models for each variable were calibrated using 10-fold cross-validation and the validation was carried out through the root mean squared error (RMSE): 14 %, 12%, 11%, 2,8%, and 20%, respectively. Besides, the textural class map was developed using USDA classification method.
