Abstract: |
This global cropping intensity product is the first 30m resolution cropping intensity dataset covering global extent. Based on the reconstructed time series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from multiple satellite images including Landsat-8, Sentinel-2 and MODIS, 30-m planetary-scale pixel by pixel cropping intensity products were generated by enumerating the total number of valid cropping cycles using a binary crop phenophase profile indicating growing and non-growing periods. The total number of valid cropping cycles were also divided by 3 (three years from 2016 to 2018) to retrieve the average cropping intensity. Based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform, we implemented our algorithm across the globe to the global cropping intensity products. |

Notes: |
The global cropping intensity dataset at 30m was tiled into 504 separate files in GEOTIFF format with GCS_WGS_1984 projection. To be precise, the spatial resolution of the data is 0.00026949459 degree. Each file covers an area of 10°×10° named in the following format ‘Cropping_Intensity_30m_2016_2018_$regions$.tif’. The regions in the file name is defined as N/S (North Hemisphere or South Hemisphere) followed by two digits of latitude of the top-left corner of the file and E/W (Eastern Hemisphere or Western Hemisphere) followed by three digits of longitude of the top-left corner. Each file includes two layers. The first layer indicates the average cropping intensity during the three years from 2016 to 2018 with noData value or masked areas assigned to -1. The valid values for the first layer are 1, 2, and 3 representing single cropping, double cropping or triple cropping. The second layer keeps the original total number of crop cycles from 2016 to 2018 with noData value or masked areas assigned to -1. Continuous cropping or number of crop cycles larger than 3 per year are indicated with value of 127. |
