This dataset is the result of a phone survey set up to measure the impact of COVID-19 on rural people in Nigeria. As most governments have urged the population to stay at home to slow down the transmission of the disease, the impact of COVID-19 can affect women and men in different ways: as an income shock (directly or indirectly); as a health and caring shock; as a shock of mobility (affecting access to water, food, firewood, schooling); and as a risk of increased domestic conflict and violence. To capture these various effects on household welfare, this phone survey was conducted with (around) 500 individuals randomly drawn from an existing list of phone numbers collected from previous household surveys with an equal proportion of women and men. The same individuals were also interviewed during other rounds to generate a longitudinal panel allowing to analyze the impact of COVID-19 through time.

A sample of about 500 individuals were drawn using systematic random sampling from an existing list of phone numbers from ‘Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS)’ survey, which IFPRI conducted in the Kaduna state and Cross Rivers of Nigeria. These regions were also the Feed the Future zones of influence. The second wave of phone survey was conducted in mid-October, 2020 with 501 respondents. Female respondents represent about 50 percent of the sample.

<p>IFPRI adheres to the principle of unrestricted public access to its own final research outputs and will make such outputs freely available. The Institute encourages the use of the <b>COVID-19 Impact on Rural Men and Women in Nigeria, Round 2</b> dataset; for detailed information on its use, please refer to <a href="https://www.ifpri.org/intellectual-property-policy">IFPRI’s Intellectual Property Policy</a>. The data files in this dataset are unit record or ‘raw’ data files. Information that would allow survey respondents to be identified has been deleted from the files, but all other information remains. IFPRI’s decision not to alter the contents of the data files means that the user of these files will need to take care in handling missing observations, outliers, and violations of logical consistency. </p><p>The data are provided ‘as is’ and in no event shall IFPRI be liable for any damages resulting from the use of the data. While great effort was taken to obtain high-quality data, the accuracy or reliability of the data is not guaranteed or warranted in any way.</p>
