Here, we investigate politicians' positions on eight central theoretical debates in the area of elections and voting behavior and compare politicians' theories to those held by ordinary citizens. Using data from face-to-face interviews with nearly 1,000 politicians in eleven countries, together with corresponding surveys of more than 12,000 citizens, we show that politicians overwhelmingly hold thin, minimalist, ``democratic realist'' theories of voting, while citizens' theories are more optimistic and policy-oriented. Politicians' theoretical tendencies -- along with their theoretical misalignment from citizens -- are remarkably consistent across countries. These theories are likely to have important consequences for how politicians campaign, communicate with the public, think about public policy, and represent their constituents.
<sumDscr/></stdyInfo><method><dataColl><sources/></dataColl><anlyInfo/></method><dataAccs><setAvail/><useStmt/><notes type="DVN:TOU" level="dv"><a href="http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0">CC0 1.0</a></notes></dataAccs><othrStdyMat><relPubl><citation><titlStmt><titl>Lucas, Jack, Lior Sheffer, Peter John Loewen, Stefaan Walgrave, Karolin Soontjens, Eran Amsalem, Stefanie Bailer, et al. 2024. “Politicians’ Theories of Voting Behavior.” American Political Science Review, 1-18.</titl><IDNo agency="doi">10.1017/S0003055424001060</IDNo></titlStmt><biblCit>Lucas, Jack, Lior Sheffer, Peter John Loewen, Stefaan Walgrave, Karolin Soontjens, Eran Amsalem, Stefanie Bailer, et al. 2024. “Politicians’ Theories of Voting Behavior.” American Political Science Review, 1-18.</biblCit></citation><ExtLink URI="https://doi.org/10.1017/S0003055424001060"/></relPubl></othrStdyMat></stdyDscr><otherMat ID="f10403715" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403715" level="datafile"><labl>codebook.pdf</labl><txt>Codebook for variables used in analysis. </txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/pdf</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403719" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403719" level="datafile"><labl>country labels.xlsx</labl><txt>Helper file to add labels to plots</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403727" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403727" level="datafile"><labl>data_allresp.RDS</labl><txt>Main dataset</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403726" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403726" level="datafile"><labl>data_citizen_extremity.RDS</labl><txt>Data for response extremity analysis in SM</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403724" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403724" level="datafile"><labl>data_cso.RDS</labl><txt>Data for citizen self/other analysis in SM</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403721" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403721" level="datafile"><labl>data_lca_probs.RDS</labl><txt>Data for LCA types add’l information in SM</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403716" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403716" level="datafile"><labl>data_lca.RDS</labl><txt>Data set up for LCA</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403718" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403718" level="datafile"><labl>data_lca_results.RDS</labl><txt>LCA Results file</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403717" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403717" level="datafile"><labl>data_localpols.RDS</labl><txt>Belgian local politicians for test in SM</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403728" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403728" level="datafile"><labl>data_timing.RDS</labl><txt>Response timing data for analysis in SM</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/gzip</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403723" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403723" level="datafile"><labl>ethics.pdf</labl><txt>Additional information on ethics approvals and ethics approval certificates from Research Ethics Boards.</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/pdf</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403720" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403720" level="datafile"><labl>question labels.xlsx</labl><txt>Helper file to add labels to plots</txt><notes level="file" type="DATAVERSE:CONTENTTYPE" subject="Content/MIME Type">application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.spreadsheetml.sheet</notes></otherMat><otherMat ID="f10403714" URI="https://dataverse.harvard.edu/api/access/datafile/10403714" level="datafile"><labl>_readme.pdf</labl><txt>Description of files.
