The overall aim of the program is to transform agricultural systems through sustainable intensification projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Malawi, Ethiopia and (potentially) Zambia. In Malawi, the project (led by IITA) will be supporting cereal-based Farming Systems. The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) leads the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) activities of the AR program. As part of the M&E activities in Malawi, IFPRI contracted Invest in Knowledge Initiative (IKI) to conduct baseline household and community surveys in Ntcheu and Dedza districts. Ntcheu and Dedza are the two districts in which participatory action research and adaptive experimentation is currently being conducted, led by researchers from Michigan State University (MSU). Interventions in these two districts involve "mother and baby" adaptive trials. Four intervention extension planning areas (EPAs) have been identified within the two districts to implement the research activities, with each EPA having 2 "mother" trials and about 110 "baby" farmers. The main objective of this survey is to collect high-quality baseline household data to support the M&E activities of the AR program in Malawi. Based on site characteristics and local knowledge, Africa RISING research team and IFPRI's M&E team identified candidate communities. Target action communities were selected from within these candidate communities. The control communities were then identified from within the same agro-ec ological zone. From the action communities, sample of the households receiving the benefits and the households not receiving the benefits were randomly selected. All the households receiving program benefits were surveyed. There were 398 program beneficiary households. On the other hand, a a sample of 207 non-beneficiary households were selected randomly from the action communities. Data from this group will be used to assess potential spillovers. From the control communities, a rando m sample of 544 households were selected. While the beneficiary sample is pre-determined, the size of non-beneficiary and control samples was guided by power calculations based on maize yield data from the 2011 Malawi Integrated Household Survey (IHS-3).
