We explore this question by conducting an experimental study in Bosnia --- a European democracy, where, unlike the rest of Europe, Muslims are neither immigrants nor socio-economically disadvantaged. This helps us clearly identify the radicalization potential of Western rhetoric alone, absent contextual factors such as social inferiority. Experimental evidence with Bosnian Muslims from five surveys (with a total N=2,608) suggests that rhetorical attacks on Islam by Western politicians do not strengthen individuals' Muslim identity, cause higher levels of animosity toward the West, or lead to condoning the use of violence. We also find that pro-Muslim rhetoric, while increasing positive views of the West, does not affect individuals' strength of Muslim identity or their radical sympathies. These results provide important implications for our understanding of sources of radicalization and for efforts to curb radical tendencies."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Radical Attitudes"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Anti-Muslim Rhetoric"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Identity Threat"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"O'Brochta, William"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2020-07-09"}]}},"files":[{"description":"Code to run a modified coefficient plot used to present the results.","label":"CoefPlot.R","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":201491,"dataFile":{"id":3978384,"persistentId":"","filename":"CoefPlot.R","contentType":"type/x-r-syntax","friendlyType":"R Syntax","filesize":5730,"description":"Code to run a modified coefficient plot used to present the results.","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:173358999a0-c1e0787fe1a2","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"67666e6b718387b0af9153ac8cd843a5","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"67666e6b718387b0af9153ac8cd843a5"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationDate":"2020-10-22","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"description":"Dataset of Bosnian survey respondents used for this analysis.","label":"MergedDataset.tab","restricted":false,"version":3,"datasetVersionId":201491,"dataFile":{"id":3978386,"persistentId":"","filename":"MergedDataset.tab","contentType":"text/tab-separated-values","friendlyType":"Tab-Delimited","filesize":211083,"description":"Dataset of Bosnian survey respondents used for this analysis.","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:1733588f5a4-5e1e4927c8ee","originalFileFormat":"application/x-stata-14","originalFormatLabel":"Stata 14 Binary","originalFileSize":149754,"originalFileName":"MergedDataset.dta","UNF":"UNF:6:eBBKLpUlxUGF50W1AXG3Lw==","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"07ef42eee0dc245374b2f7ad62ce0bf7","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"07ef42eee0dc245374b2f7ad62ce0bf7"},"tabularData":true,"creationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationDate":"2020-10-22","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"description":"Description of included files.","label":"Read_Me.rtf","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":201491,"dataFile":{"id":3978383,"persistentId":"","filename":"Read_Me.rtf","contentType":"text/rtf","friendlyType":"Rich Text Format","filesize":1778,"description":"Description of included files.","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:1733588f882-593bedcc932b","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"fad75d63b4a74978d967379f21414683","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"fad75d63b4a74978d967379f21414683"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationDate":"2020-10-22","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"description":"Log file containing all regression output.","label":"RhetoricRadicalizationLog.log","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":201491,"dataFile":{"id":3978385,"persistentId":"","filename":"RhetoricRadicalizationLog.log","contentType":"text/plain","friendlyType":"Plain Text","filesize":75106,"description":"Log file containing all regression output.","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:1733588fd50-821b512499bd","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"dd93fcc79860726d04ace7a62ff80262","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"dd93fcc79860726d04ace7a62ff80262"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationDate":"2020-10-22","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"description":"Commented code with all results discussed in the main text and the SI.","label":"RhetoricRadicalization.R","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":201491,"dataFile":{"id":3978382,"persistentId":"","filename":"RhetoricRadicalization.R","contentType":"type/x-r-syntax","friendlyType":"R Syntax","filesize":19196,"description":"Commented code with all results discussed in the main text and the SI.","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:1733588faa9-0766fc615e88","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"3de4a29f3234c4746a1085ac7ab2de1f","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"3de4a29f3234c4746a1085ac7ab2de1f"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-07-09","publicationDate":"2020-10-22","fileAccessRequest":false}}],"citation":"O'Brochta, William; Tavits, Margit; Aksoy, Deniz, 2020, \"Replication Data for: Western Political Rhetoric and Radicalization\", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/UW5CSR, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:eBBKLpUlxUGF50W1AXG3Lw== [fileUNF]"}}
