survey was implemented to assess on-farm performance of the genetically improved farmed tilapia in Bangladesh. The primary sampling unit was tilapia aquaculture producers. The survey comprised the following modules: (1) farmer characteristics; (2) aquaculture production and marketing activities including input use and cost as well as output harvested and sold; (3) social networks; (4) access to information and financial services; (5) participation in farmer groups; and (6) risk preference and behaviour; and (7) assets ownership. Data on aquaculture production were collected at pond level. First, the tilapia fish seed dissemination system was divided into five broad classifications. Next, a pre-existing list of hatcheries—organised by district and the strain produced—was obtained from WorldFish, Bangladesh and a validation exercise conducted to identify those that were still in operation and to verify the strain information. Hatcheries were then grouped according to the five classifications of dissemination system. Some hatcheries produced both GIFT and non-GIFT strains. A few others produced both the latest and earlier strains of GIFT. Inclusion of such hatcheries in the sample is problematic. Hatcheries may not keep separate lists for buyers of GIFT versus non-GIFT, and similarly for latest versus earlier strains, making it difficult to clearly distinguish between: (1) adopters and non-adopters of GIFT and (2) adopters of the latest versus earlier strains of GIFT. In order to avoid this problem, such hatcheries were excluded from the sample. This procedure generated 14 districts for inclusion in the study, which were categorised into five clusters as follows: (C1) South west including Jessore , Khulna, Satkhira, Narail; (C2) South including Bhola, Patuakhali; (C3) South east including Comilla, Chandpur, Noakhali; (C4) North centre including Mymensingh and Sherpur; and (C5) North west including Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Gaibandha."}]}},"files":[{"description":"","label":"codebook_GIFT_Bangladesh.xls","restricted":false,"directoryLabel":"GIFT_Bangladesh/7.
