It should be particularly worrisome for the statistical analysis of networks,\r\ngiven the complex dependencies that shape network formation combined with the re-\r\nstrictive assumptions of related models. In this paper, we demonstrate the importance\r\nof explicitly accounting for unobserved heterogeneity in exponential random graph\r\nmodels (ERGM) with a Monte Carlo analysis and two applications that have played\r\nan important role in the networks literature. Overall, these analyses show that failing\r\nto account for unobserved heterogeneity can have a significant impact on inferences\r\nabout network formation. The proposed frailty extension to the ERGM (FERGM)\r\ngenerally outperforms the ERGM in these cases, and does so by relatively large mar-\r\ngins. Moreover, our novel multilevel estimation strategy has the advantage of avoiding\r\nthe problem of degeneration that plagues the standard MCMC-MLE approach."},"dsDescriptionDate":{"typeName":"dsDescriptionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2016-02-28"}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"publication","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"publicationCitation":{"typeName":"publicationCitation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Forthcoming, Political Analysis "},"publicationIDType":{"typeName":"publicationIDType","multiple":false,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":"doi"}}]},{"typeName":"producer","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"producerName":{"typeName":"producerName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Political Analysis"},"producerURL":{"typeName":"producerURL","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"http://pan.oxfordjournals.org/"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Morgan, Jason"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2017-02-28"},{"typeName":"series","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"seriesName":{"typeName":"seriesName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Volume #, Issue #"}}]}]},"geospatial":{"displayName":"Geospatial Metadata","name":"geospatial","fields":[]},"journal":{"displayName":"Journal Metadata","name":"journal","fields":[]}},"files":[{"description":"Replication materials, stored in a file hierarchy.
