In particular, democracy is argued to emerge and thrive in countries where liberal or freedom-oriented values (so-called self-expression values) are widespread. Inglehart and Welzel (2005), for instance, report such an effect, mainly drawing inferences from cross-country comparisons. Yet, cross-country correlations between self-expression values and democracy could stem from different processes. Reinvestigating this relationship, we find no empirical support when employing models accounting for sample-selection bias, country-specific effects, and the endogeneity of values to democracy. Self-expression values do not enhance democracy levels or democratization chances, and neither do they stabilize existing democracies. In contrast, we find indications that a country’s experience with democracy enhances self-expression values."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Dahlum, Sirianne"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2015-08-02"}]}},"files":[{"label":"DahlumKnutsen_dofile.do","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":76053,"dataFile":{"id":2696653,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/TMBOZB","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/TMBOZB","filename":"DahlumKnutsen_dofile.do","contentType":"text/plain","friendlyType":"Plain Text","filesize":77947,"storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:14eef5c7355-2a1491d3c665","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"429e2805eabe3ab863ec99420ae87040","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"429e2805eabe3ab863ec99420ae87040"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2015-08-02","publicationDate":"2017-04-18","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"label":"Data to imputation.tab","restricted":false,"version":2,"datasetVersionId":76053,"dataFile":{"id":2696650,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/RLGD27","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/RLGD27","filename":"Data to imputation.tab","contentType":"text/tab-separated-values","friendlyType":"Tab-Delimited","filesize":1101412,"storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:14eef5c975a-0dd1f0f89efc","originalFileFormat":"application/x-stata","originalFormatLabel":"Stata Binary","originalFileSize":2273434,"originalFileName":"Data to imputation.dta","UNF":"UNF:6:kfXBK1sW5RxmhI/M5acwXw==","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"1f8c2f3b53bbac3f22ca4f4f64eda345","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"1f8c2f3b53bbac3f22ca4f4f64eda345"},"tabularData":true,"creationDate":"2015-08-02","publicationDate":"2017-04-18","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"label":"Imputation_script.R","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":76053,"dataFile":{"id":2696651,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/CAPWO0","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/CAPWO0","filename":"Imputation_script.R","contentType":"text/plain","friendlyType":"Plain Text","filesize":16395,"storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:14eef5c7051-768492ef6022","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"aa08c2586a628822bfffcc14ea6f4653","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"aa08c2586a628822bfffcc14ea6f4653"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2015-08-02","publicationDate":"2017-04-18","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"label":"imputed_all6.dta","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":76053,"dataFile":{"id":2696654,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/4RE7TB","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/4RE7TB","filename":"imputed_all6.dta","contentType":"application/x-stata-13","friendlyType":"Stata 13 Binary","filesize":31416568,"storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:14eef5c7d4d-fa4b198c1225","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"86e23f9ce1f7d639531ebc1df1a09739","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"86e23f9ce1f7d639531ebc1df1a09739"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2015-08-02","publicationDate":"2017-04-18","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"label":"Original dataset_analysis.tab","restricted":false,"version":2,"datasetVersionId":76053,"dataFile":{"id":2696652,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/VCLOZR","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/GNGJQR/VCLOZR","filename":"Original dataset_analysis.tab","contentType":"text/tab-separated-values","friendlyType":"Tab-Delimited","filesize":2549701,"storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:14eef5c9930-b32de43178ad","originalFileFormat":"application/x-stata-13","originalFormatLabel":"Stata 13 Binary","originalFileSize":3176431,"originalFileName":"Original dataset_analysis.dta","UNF":"UNF:6:5GmKrUQAwky0Xgcujqv7yw==","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"a52724574f4bcb682eda0fe6b6732004","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"a52724574f4bcb682eda0fe6b6732004"},"tabularData":true,"creationDate":"2015-08-02","publicationDate":"2017-04-18","fileAccessRequest":false}}],"citation":"Dahlum, Sirianne; Knutsen, Carl Henrik, 2017, \"Replication Data for: Democracy by demand?
