We address this question in the context of\ngovernment financial reporting. Traditional financial reporting is widely considered\ntechnical and inaccessible to the public. In contrast, popular financial\nreporting is viewed as an accessible solution. As a result, we expect\npopular financial reporting to increase three outcomes relative to traditional\nfinancial reporting: recipients’ understanding, interest, and trust in government\nfinancial information. We conducted a pre-registered online survey\nexperiment with Amazon Mechanical Turk using Cloud Research to compare\nsubject responses to a Popular Annual Financial Report (a user-friendly format)\nand an Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (a traditional, technical\nformat). The Popular Annual Financial Report causes an increase in understanding,\ninterest, and trust in government financial information. The effects on interest and trust are larger for those who felt more informed about\ngovernment budgets, voted for Donald Trump in 2020, and were more\neducated."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Public reporting; financial reporting; transparency; accountability; survey experiment"}}]},{"typeName":"publication","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"publicationCitation":{"typeName":"publicationCitation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Yu, Jinhai, Nicolai Petrovsky, Zhiwei Zhang, Josephine Gatti Schafer, 2025. “Popular Financial Reporting Increases Understanding, Interest, and Trust: Experimental Evidence,” International Public Management Journal."}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Yu, Jinhai"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-04-29"}]}},"files":[{"description":"Stata do file","label":"code_for_data_PFR.do","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":443217,"dataFile":{"id":11122156,"persistentId":"","filename":"code_for_data_PFR.do","contentType":"application/x-stata-syntax","friendlyType":"Stata Syntax","filesize":18481,"description":"Stata do file","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:196822ff310-4a52aeb59df7","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"9fd6447978c13cd704232f3a11644187","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"9fd6447978c13cd704232f3a11644187"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2025-04-29","publicationDate":"2025-04-29","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"description":"Data for replication","label":"data_PFR.tab","restricted":false,"version":3,"datasetVersionId":443217,"dataFile":{"id":11122157,"persistentId":"","filename":"data_PFR.tab","contentType":"text/tab-separated-values","friendlyType":"Tab-Delimited","filesize":161904,"description":"Data for replication","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:196822ff3e4-e98b9cd71fc9","originalFileFormat":"application/x-stata-14","originalFormatLabel":"Stata 14 Binary","originalFileSize":190107,"originalFileName":"data_PFR.dta","UNF":"UNF:6:wvUFZLfqe7qR/V3g+8tEYw==","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"ecbf14a48b0c9ae48fcf5e829c3cd333","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"ecbf14a48b0c9ae48fcf5e829c3cd333"},"tabularData":true,"creationDate":"2025-04-29","publicationDate":"2025-04-29","fileAccessRequest":true}}],"citation":"Yu, Jinhai; Nicolai Petrovsky; Zhiwei Zhang; Josephine Gatti Schafer, 2025, \"Replication Data for: Popular financial reporting increases understanding, interest, and trust: experimental evidence\", https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/6SHIKB, Harvard Dataverse, V1, UNF:6:wvUFZLfqe7qR/V3g+8tEYw== [fileUNF]"}}
