Background

The Healthy Communities Database is maintained by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Healthy Communities Database is a model practice database that includes practices and initiatives which counties have implemented to prevent childhood obesity. Topics include: nutritious diets, physical activity, built environments, and social environments.

User Functionality

Users can search for model\npractices by state, county size (i.e., small, medium, large), issue areas, practice type (i.e., initiative, policy, program), or keyword. Information includes a summary of the model practice, county-specific information, as well as contact information for the model practice.\n

Data resources described in this catalog include data sets, statistics, interactive tables and maps, and databases. \r\n\r\n

Search Options

Topic Folders

On the left side of the homepage, the Topic Folders section provides a list of broad categories included in MCH Data Connect Clicking on a folder (or subfolder) will result in a list of resources that are related to the topic. These folders offer a starting place for your search. You can narrow your search further by performing either of the two searching techniques mentioned below.\r\n\r\n

Basic Search

Locate the Search Studies highlighted box below. Leave Cataloging Information as the default basic search command. To search, enter the keyword, topic or area of interest in field box (next to Cataloging Information) to obtain a list of resources that apply to your search.\r\n\r\n

Advanced Search

Click on the Advanced Search link located on the right hand side of the Search Studies box. From the Search Scope drop down lists, choose either Keyword, Abstract, or Geographic Unit (these are the most detailed fields used by MCH Data Connect). If entering Geographic Unit- please enter one of the following: International, U.S. national, U.S. regional, U.S. state, U.S. county, U.S. city. \r\n\r\n

Accessing Resources

\r\nOnce the search is completed, a list of resources will appear. The first line provides a brief summary of the resource. To get more information (including producer, background, user functionality, and data sources) about the specific resource, click on the underlined/ blue hyperlinked title. Once the resource description is opened, click on the link that says “Click here to access data from site” to go directly to the resource's web page.\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nCollection, broad categories into which resources have been classified
\r\n\r\nHow to Cite, used as the resource title by MCH Data Connect
\r\n\r\nStudy Global ID, unique code given to each resource
\r\n\r\nProducer, the agency or entity that produces and maintains the resource
\r\n\r\nDeposit Date, date when resource was added to MCH Data Connect
\r\n\r\nProvenance, will always be MCH Data Connect
\r\n\r\nAbstract and Scope, contains resource summary and geographic unit information
\r\n\r\nAbstract, summary of the resource
\r\n\r\nBackground, information about the purpose and development of the resource
\r\n\r\nUser Functionality, what users can do with the data (i.e. download, customize charts)
\r\n\r\nData Notes, information about data sources, years and samples (if applicable)
\r\n\r\nAbstract Date, month and year that resource was added to MCH Data Connect
\r\n\r\nKeyword, specific variables, topics, or words that the resource addresses/encompasses

\r\n\r\nTitle, name of specific resource
\r\n\r\nKeyword Vocabulary, “link:” clicking on “link” will take user to an external website related to the keyword term.
