Produced in a partnership between Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy (YCELP) and the Center for Integrated Earth System Information (CIESIN) at Columbia University since 2000, the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), and its predecessor, the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI), are international country comparative indices that rank countries according to environmental stewardship. EPI uses a proximity-to-target methodology that rates country performance on major environmental issues (e.g., air pollution, biodiversity protection, climate change mitigation) with a focus mostly on outcome metrics. The ESI took a broader approach by measuring relative sustainability across a much wider range of indicators, including a broader mix of driving force, pressure, state, impact and policy response indicators.
\n\nThe EPI offers a scorecard that highlights leaders and laggards in environmental performance and provides practical guidance for countries that aspire to move toward a sustainable future. EPI indicators provide a way to spot problems, set targets, track trends, understand outcomes, and identify best policy practices.
