This series consists of an automated inventory of the names and locations of physical and cultural geographic features located throughout the United States. It contains information on about two million physical and cultural geographic features. The Federally recognized name\nof each feature described in the data base is identified, and references are made to a feature's location by state, county, and geographic coordinates. GNIS has three subseries: the National Geographic Names Data Base (NGNDB), the Topographic Map Names Data Base (TMNDB), and the Reference Data Base Generic File (RDB) data file. There is one NGNDB file for each state, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Micronesia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The NGNDB is linked to the data in the TMNDB by United States Geological Survey (USGS) Quadrangle Code. The NGNDB is linked to the RDB by the Bibliographic Code. The NGNDB records include, for each feature: the official name of the feature; the feature type; the county(s) in which the feature is located; the name(s) of the USGS 1:24,000-scale topographic map(s) on which the feature is shown; geographic coordinates locating the mouth of linear features and the approximate center of aerial features, and coordinates locating the feature on each additional (if any) USGS 1:24,000-scale map on which the feature is shown; a bibliographic code referring to the source of information for each record, and other names by which the feature may be or may have been known. Some records include information about the history of the feature or the origin of the feature name. The TMNDB contains five separate files; one for each topographic map series. They include the 7.5- by 7.5-minute series, the 15- by 15-minute series, the 30- by 30-minute series (out of print), the 30-minute by 1-degree series, and the 1-degree by 2-degrees series. Data are reported by quadrangle and include percent cou\nnty coverage, latitude and longitude coordinate of southeast corner, quadrangle size, quadrangle name and former name(s), 7.5 x 15 minute map name, quadrangle scale, state and county name, and state code. The RDB is designed for use as a research and reference tool as well as a depository of reference information for GNIS. The information in the RDB contains the complete annotated bibliographies of all source material (in addition to USGS topographic maps) used in the compilation of the NGNDB.\n
