The agency arranged for the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research to prepare the data and documentation for public use. This series contains data on confinement facilities and state - operated community - based correctional institutions throughout the United States.  Each of these institutions represents the unit of analysis wi\nthin the studies.  The data includes information about prisons, such as their physical security, age of corrections facilities, functions of facilities, programs, inmate work assignments, staff employment, facilities under court order / consent decree for conditions of confinement, capital and operating expenditures, custody level of residents / inmates, and one - day and average daily population counts.  Other data describes the prisoners including race / ethnicity of inmates, their work assignments, deaths, special inmate counts, and assaults and incidents by inmates.\n</p> \t\t    <p> \t\t\tThis data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
