The study sought to link any later appearance of physical or neurological disorder to patterns during the perinatal period in order to develop strategies for prevention and intervention. The data collected was used for a wide ra\nnge of analyses about maternal health services, childbirth, child development, and child health. This series contains data from a study of over 55,000 pregnancies and the children born of these pregnancies at 14 university affiliated medical centers that provided care mostly to low income women. The series consists of three types of data files: a master file, a variable file (selected summary data from the master file), and work files (data related to specific topics). In most cases, the data in the work files are not from either the master file or variable file, but are derived from the master file and from the original completed study forms. The information includes the events, conditions, and abnormalities of pregnancy, labor, and delivery. It also includes the pediatric neurological condition and mental health status of the children at birth, at four, eight, and twelve months and at three, four, seven, and eight years. The files also contain extensive demographic, physical, and health related information on the mothers, fathers, the children, and their siblings. The major categories of data collected include obstetrical; perinatal; pediatric; pathological; serological; socioeconomic;\nfamily relations; genetic history; psychological; and speech, language, and hearing development.\n</p> \t\t <p> \t\t\tThis data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
