During intercensal years, these annual surveys provided a continuous series of basic statistics for geographic areas and industries as well as benchmarks for business indicators and for measures of industrial production and productivity. The agency produced\nsummary reports and data files from the annual survey. This series contains summary data on establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing. The series consists of individual issuances of annual summary data from 1976 and 1999 and historical data for the period 1949 through 1995 released with the 1987 and 1992 Economic Census program. The 1976 files include detailed statistics for industry groups and industries; employment and labor cost by industry groups and industry; value of manufacturers' inventories for industry groups and industries; fuels and electric energy used for heat and power by industry group and industry; quantity and cost of purchased fuels and electric energy used for heat and power for states and Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs); expenditures for new plant and equipment by industry group and industry; gross book value of depreciable assets and value of shipments for operating manufacturing establishments by industry group and industry; rental payments for structures and machinery and equipment for operating manufacturing establishments by industry group and industry; statistics for states, SMSAs, large industrial counties, and selected cities; industry statistics for SMSAs; industry statistics for selected SMSAs; and industry profiles. The 1999 files contain data on the value of shipments for product classes and statistics for all manufacturing establishments and for industry groups and industries such as the number of establishments, employment, payroll, value of shipments, value added, and capital expenditures\n. Data are presented for the U.S. and for states.Files with historical data for the period 1949 through 1995 contain data for the U.S. and states on the number of manufacturing establishments, employment, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified by the 2-, 3-, and 4-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code in which they are primarily engaged. Also available are historical statistics for the value of product shipments by 4- and 5-digit product class code.\n
