The agency produced summary statistic files for researchers. This series contains summary statistics from an enumeration of establishments engaged in a variety of services to individuals and business establishments. The Census of Selected Services from 1972 consist of five files (SA1 through SA5). SA1 presents detailed kin\nd-of-business statistics (2-, 3-, and 4-digit industry levels) on number of establishments and receipts (total and with payroll), number of proprietorships and partnerships, annual and first quarter payroll, and number of paid employees. SA2 contains the same data items as above for selected services total, in addition to the number of establishments and receipts for five major kind of business groups. SA3 contains number of establishments and receipts for selected services total and for 130 kind of business classifications. SA4 presents receipts and rank by volume of receipts. SA5 statistics are given by city size for number of incorporated cities, total population, number of establishments, receipts, yearly payroll, and percent of total by population and sales. The 1977 and 1982 Census of Service Industries data are from the Geographic Area Series. These files present summary statistics, including 10 kinds of business, for states, counties, and all incorporated places of 2,500 or more inhabitants. Data include number of establishments, receipts, payroll, first quarter payroll, and number of employees. The 1987 Census of Service Industries files are in three parts: Geographic Area Series, Nonemployer Statistics, and Establishment and Firm Size. Geographic Area Series files have data for the U.S., states, metropolitan areas, counties, and places. Data include the number of establishments, receipts, payroll for the entire year and for the first quarter, number of paid employees, number of sole proprietorships, number of unincorporated businesses, ex\npenses per establishment, expenses per employee, annual payroll per employee and employees per establishment. Nonemployer Statistics files have data for the U.S., states, metropolitan areas, counties, and places of 2,500 establishments or more for establishments without payroll. Data include the number of establishments and their sales by kind of business and by geographic area. Geographic Area Statistics for nonemployers is also available. The Establishment and Firm Size file has national data cross-tabulated by the size of establishment, size of company or firm, and by legal form of organization. Information is provided for both taxable and tax-exempt industries, by kind of business, on the number of establishments, receipts or revenues, payroll, and employment. Establishment data are published by receipts size and by employment size; data for firms are shown by receipts size (including concentration by largest firms), by employment size, and by number of establishments operated.Also available from the 1987 Census of Service Industries are data by ZIP Code. ZIP Code data are provided in two types of files for the states and all ZIP Codes. In the first, counts of taxable service establishments with payroll are classified by receipts-size and employment-size categories and shown for each detailed kind of business classification that is present in each ZIP Code. The second file presents more conventional economic census statistics, such as number of establishments, sales, payroll, and employment, for the ZIP Code without regard to kind of business. For the 1992 Census of Service Industries, summary data are available for taxable and tax exempt service establishments. For each tax category, there are three parts: Geographic Area Statistics, Sources of Receipts or Revenue, and Establishment and Firm Size files. The Geographic Area Series files contain statistics for 309 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) or kind of business codes for the U.S., states, counties, places, and metropolitan areas. Summary data include number of establishments, sales, annual and first quarter payroll, number of paid employees, inventories, operating expenses, and comparative statistics. Some Geographic Area Series data from the 1987 census is included. The Sources of Revenue or Receipts files contain data by revenue line within kind of business for the U.S., states, and metropolitan areas. Establishment and Firm Size files contain establishment statistics presented by sales size and by employment size; statistics for firms, by sales size (including concentration by largest firms), by employment size, and by number of establishments operated. Statistics on establishment and firm size are shown at the national level. Statistics are presented by kind of business and type of operation on the number of establishments and sales. Also available from the 1992 Census of Service Industries are ZIP Code statistics for 1987 and 1992 showing the number of establishments, receipts, payroll, and employment for the U.S., state, and ZIP Code levels. For 1992, there are also detailed counts of service establishments with payroll, classified by receipts size ranges and employment size ranges, for each detailed kind of business at the U.S., state, and ZIP Code level. Also available are statistics on the number of establishments, receipts, receipts size, of establishments, and legal form of organization for nonemployers.\n
