The agency produced summary statistic files for researchers. This series contains summary statistics from an enumeration of manufacturing establishments engaged in the mechanical or chemical transformation of materials or substances into new products. These establishments are usually described as plants, factories or mills and\ncharacteristically use power-driven machines and materials-handling equipment. The Census of Manufactures files from 1972 consist of two subseries: Industry Summary Statistics (MA) and Location of Manufacturing Plants (ML). The MA files present summaries at the 2-, 3-, or 4-digit industry level, by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code and include the total number of establishments, the number of establishments with 20 or more employees, payroll, number of production workers, production man-hours, production wages, value added by manufacture, cost of materials, value of shipments, new capital expenditures, establishment counts by employment size categories, industry summaries by seven employment size categories with end-of-year inventories, and the quantity and delivered cost of specific materials consumed in the manufacturing process. The ML files provide information on the number of manufacturing establishments in each of the 450 manufacturing industries, classified according to their employment size class and the state and county within which they are located. There is a record for each industry-county combination with one or more manufacturing plants. The Census of Manufactures files fro\nm 1977 are comprised of five subseries: Analytical Ratio Tabulations Files; Fuels and Electric Energy Consumed Files; Geographic Area Series Files; Industry Series Files; and the Location of Manufacturing Plants File. The Analytical Ratio Tabulations Files contain statistics for the United States and designated geographic regions on selected fuels by employment size class, by gross book value of depreciable assets, and by value of shipments. The Fuels and Electric Energy Consumed Files contain statistics by industry group and industry on quantities and costs of specified fuels and electric energy used for heat and power. It also shows the quantity of electric energy generated less electric energy sold by manufacturing plants in the United States during 1977. The Geographic Area Series Files contain summary statistics and industry specific statistics on the number of manufacturing establishments, employment, payroll, the number of production workers, cost of materials, value of shipments, value added by manufacture, manufacturers' inventories, and capital expenditures for plant and equipment for states, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs), Standard Consolidated Statistical Areas, and counties and cities with 450 manufacturing employees or more. There are four 1977 Industry Series Files and they provide summaries at the 4- and 5-digit industry level for the United States and for states. Some comparative data from the 1972 census is included. Statistics reported include the total number of establishments; number of establishments by employment size categories; total number of employees; payroll; number of production workers, man-hours, and wages; value added by manufacture; cost of materials; value of shipments; product specialization; and new capital expenditures. The 1977 Location of Manufacturing Plants file has data for States, counties, and places of 2,500 inhabitants or more and presents data on the number of manufacturing establishments by employment-size class in each of the 450 manufacturing industries at the 4-digit SIC level. Establishment data are presented in seven employment-size categories. The 1982 Census of Manufactures is comprised of three subseries: Geographic Area and Industry Series Files; Location of Manufacturing Plants File; and Product and Materials Files. The Geographic Area and Industry Series Files have data for the United States, states, SMSAs, counties, and selected places with 450 or more employees. Some comparative data from earlier censuses is included. The files present industry-specific summary statistics for employment and payroll, shipments, cost of materials, value added, inventories, expenditures, assets, rents, depreciation, and purchased services. The Location of Manufacturing Plants file has data for states, counties, and places of 2,500 inhabitants or more and includes data on the number of manufacturing establishments by employment size class in each of the 450 manufacturing industries. Establishment data are presented in seven employment size categories. The Product and Materials Files have data for the United States and include industry specific summary statistics on the quantity and value of products shipments, and the quantity and cost of materials consumed. Also available are statistics on the number of establishments, value of shipments, number of employees, wages, value added, and capital expenditures for nonemployers. The 1987 Census of Manufactures summary files consist of three subseries: Geographic Area Series, Industry Series, and Location of Manufacturing Plants files. Also available are summary data from the specialty data series Concentration Ratios in Manufacturing and Exports from Manufacturing Establishments, 1987-89. The Geographic Area Series File has data for the United States, states, metropolitan areas, counties, and selected places with 450 or more employees and include the number of establishment, number of employees, payroll, value\nof shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified by the 2-, 3-, and 4-digit SIC codes in which they are primarily engaged. The Industry Series files provide U.S. summary data on the number of establishment, number of employees, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics for establishments, classified by the 4-digit SIC codes in which they are primarily engaged, and, to a lesser extent, by employment size class, product class specialization, and year. The Location of Manufacturing Plants files present counts of the number of establishments by employment size by 4-digit SIC by geographic area. Data are provided for the United States, states, counties and places. Other available 1987 Census of Manufactures data include the Location of Manufacturing Plants by ZIP Code data. These files present the number of establishments by employment size class for 2- or 4-digit SIC for the United States, states, and ZIP Code. Also available are statistics on the number of establishments, value of shipments, number of employees, wages, value added, and capital expenditures for nonemployers. The 1992 Census of Manufactures summary files consist of three main subseries: Final General Summary Data (including Geographic Area Series files); Final Industry Series; and Location of Manufacturing Plants files. Also available are summary data from the specialty data series Concentration Ratios in Manufacturing, Selected Characteristics of Manufacturing and Wholesale Establishments that Export, and Manufacturers' Shipments to Federal Government Agencies. Final General Summary data files are comprised of establishment-based industry statistics, geographic area statistics, and miscellaneous statistics. These files contain data on the number of establishments, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, and other statistics by detailed SIC code, State and metropolitan area, or by organizational characteristics. Some comparative statistics from prior economic censuses are included. The Final Industry Series files present statistics on the 459 4-digit SIC manufacturing industries including number of establishments, payroll, value of shipments, value added, capital expenditures, quantity and production of shipments, and materials consumed. The Location of Manufacturing Plants files contain counts of establishments by SIC by employment size for the United States, states, counties, and places. Also available from the 1992 Census of Manufactures are ZIP Code statistics for 1987 and 1992 showing the number of establishments by employment size range for 2- and 4-digit SIC code.\n</p> \t\t <p> \t\t\tThis data comprises government records extracted from the Archival Research Catalog (ARC).
