Survey results were used to determine the vacancy rate for New York City's rental stock. The agency prepared summary tabulations and public use microdata files from the survey. This series contains data on the characteristics of housing units and their occupants from a sample of approximately 18,000 units selected primarily from the 1990 census addre\nss list for New York City.The series includes data on household income, poverty income levels, monthly rent, monthly mortgage payments, utility costs, routine maintenance fees, and real estate taxes. Labor force data show characteristics for all household members 15 years and older. Data also include the condition of the building, the occupancy status of the unit, the year the building was built, whether the unit is owner or renter occupied, condominium or cooperative status of the building, and for 1996 and 1999, wheelchair accessibility. Additional data include the number of stories, units, and rooms in the unit; the type of heating fuel; maintenance indicators such as cracks or holes in walls or floors; and the occurrences of heating equipment breakdowns.Data for vacant units include information on the number of stories and rooms, the presence of an elevator, principal type of heating fuel, and wheelchair accessibility (1996 and 1999). In addition, data also show the duration of the vacancy, the occupancy status before vacancy, whether the unit is available for rent or sale, the reason the unit is not available for sale or for rent, and if for rent, the monthly asking rent. Non-interview cases match to a unit that was either occupied or vacant in the preceding / succeeding survey cycle.\n
