First, there has been a scarcity of longitudinal roll call data. Second, even where such data exist, scaling ideal points within a single state is inadequate. No comparisons can be made to other state legislatures or  Congress. Our project suggests a solution to both of these problems. We use a new comparative data set of state legislative roll calls beginning in the mid-1990s to generate ideal points for legislators. We take advantage of the fact that state legislators sometimes go on to serve in Congress to create a common ideological scale by acting as ``bridge actors.'' Using these bridge actors for 11 states, we create new state legislative ideal points in congressional common space. We conclude by illustrating how these scores can be used to address important topics in state and legislative politics."},"dsDescriptionDate":{"typeName":"dsDescriptionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2011"}}]},{"typeName":"publication","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"publicationCitation":{"typeName":"publicationCitation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Boris Shor and Christopher Berry and Nolan McCarty, \"A Bridge to Somewhere: Mapping State and Congressional Ideology on a Cross-Institutional Common Space\", Legislative Studies Quarterly 35:3, August 2010, 417-448."}}]},{"typeName":"distributionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2011"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2011-03-27"},{"typeName":"timePeriodCovered","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"timePeriodCoveredStart":{"typeName":"timePeriodCoveredStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"1993"},"timePeriodCoveredEnd":{"typeName":"timePeriodCoveredEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2005"}}]}]},"geospatial":{"displayName":"Geospatial Metadata","name":"geospatial","fields":[{"typeName":"geographicCoverage","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"country":{"typeName":"country","multiple":false,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":"United States"}}]},{"typeName":"geographicUnit","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["States"]}]}},"files":[{"description":"Aggregate state year data, 1993-2005","label":"shor berry mccarty lsq 2010 tscs data.tab","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":59531,"dataFile":{"id":2290764,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/P7HU5A/COD4QV","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/P7HU5A/COD4QV","filename":"shor berry mccarty lsq 2010 tscs data.tab","contentType":"text/tab-separated-values","friendlyType":"Tab-Delimited","filesize":24392,"description":"Aggregate state year data, 1993-2005","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:67054","originalFileFormat":"application/x-stata","originalFormatLabel":"Stata Binary","originalFileSize":18579,"originalFileName":"shor berry mccarty lsq 2010 tscs data.dta","UNF":"UNF:5:KXwF/TPc7wZDZEznc9dxQw==","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"467b228471cb6cde432de566213d3494","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"467b228471cb6cde432de566213d3494"},"tabularData":true,"creationDate":"2011-03-27","publicationDate":"2011-03-26","lastUpdateTime":"2011-03-29T04:04:38Z","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"description":"Published version of the paper","label":"shor et al 2010 - a bridge to somewhere - mapping state and congressional ideology.pdf","restricted":false,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":59531,"dataFile":{"id":2290807,"persistentId":"doi:10.7910/DVN/P7HU5A/AT5AN4","pidURL":"https://doi.org/10.7910/DVN/P7HU5A/AT5AN4","filename":"shor et al 2010 - a bridge to somewhere - mapping state and congressional ideology.pdf","contentType":"application/pdf","friendlyType":"Adobe PDF","filesize":795838,"description":"Published version of the paper","storageIdentifier":"s3://dvn-cloud:67100","rootDataFileId":-1,"md5":"dfddc786f2d01a0099c6eede27f846cb","checksum":{"type":"MD5","value":"dfddc786f2d01a0099c6eede27f846cb"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2011-03-29","publicationDate":"2011-03-28","lastUpdateTime":"2011-03-29T04:04:38Z","fileAccessRequest":false}}]}}}
