The data were collected through Demographic and Health Surveys, large standardized population-based cluster surveys conducted in many developing countries. This study draws data from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania collected during the years 2003-2004:  Burkina Faso: Standard DHS, 2003; Cameroon: Standard DHS, 2004; Ghana: Standard DHS, 2003; Kenya: Standard DHS, 2003; Tanzania: Standard AIS, 2003-04.   The dataset includes a broad range of sociodemographic, attitudinal and behavioral data. In addition, HIV tests were conducted for a random subset of survey respondents.  Access to DHS data is restricted to approved users, and for this reason the analysis dataset is not included in this record.
