However there has been relatively little research into how these groups are viewed by the larger Muslim society from which they arise. The attitudes of this larger society are important for a variety of reasons. At the broadest level, they tell us whether these groups are considered legitimate in terms of their goals as well as their methods. They also tell us how much support such groups are likely to get from the larger society, both directly and indirectly. To understand the public’s feelings about these groups, it is also critical to understand the prevailing narratives in the societies they come from. Since September 11, 2001, the United States has undertaken a “war on terrorism,” introducing large numbers of troops into Islamic countries, particularly Afghanistan and Iraq. How do people in the Islamic world understand the purpose of these US efforts? Are their interpretations consonant with the i\nnterpretations offered by al Qaeda and related groups? Do Muslims perceive that US forces are a stabilizing force or a threatening one? Al Qaeda and other groups have not emerged simply in reaction to US policies. They have a broad ideological agenda that includes transforming Islamic countries. How much do these goals resonate with the larger society? Do they favor living in an Islamic state? Do they seek the kind of isolation from Western influences that al Qaeda calls for? The use of violence against civilians for political purposes has figured prominently in debates about al Qaeda and related groups. Do Muslims believe that it is consistent with Islam? Do they think the current situation warrants such acts? To answer these and other questions WorldPublicOpinion.org conducted an in-depth study of public opinion in Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, and Indonesia. The research was primarily supported by the START Consortium at the University of Maryland. Other scholars of the START Consortium participated in the development of the questionnaire."},"dsDescriptionDate":{"typeName":"dsDescriptionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2011"}}]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"conflict"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"democracy"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"education"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"elections"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"extremist"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"ideologies"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"religion"}}]},{"typeName":"topicClassification","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"topicClassValue":{"typeName":"topicClassValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"conflict"}}]},{"typeName":"publication","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"publicationCitation":{"typeName":"publicationCitation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Kull, S., Ramsay, C., Weber, S., Lewis, E., Mohseni, E., Speck, M., Ciolek, M., & Brouwer, M. Differences were reconciled with the agencies in each country. In Egypt, the survey sampled 1,000 adults in urban areas, drawn from seven governorates. In Indonesia, the multi-stage probability sample of 1,141 adults in Indonesia included both urban and rural areas and represented approximately 88 percent of Indonesia's population. In Morocco, the survey sampled 1,000 adults aged 18 years and older. The survey was conducted in both rural and urban areas covering approximately 79 percent of the Moroccan population. In Pakistan, the survey sampled 1,243 Pakistani adults in a multi-stage probability design covering areas that represented approximately 90 percent of Pakistan's population. In Indonesia, the response rate was 68%. The field agent did not face any major difficulties during the fieldwork. But, for certain areas such as in Aceh, Ambon and East Java, they had to be more careful in interviewing the respondents. A few respondents did not want to answer certain questions, or they refused to be interviewed since they thought\nit is not safe for them to talk about Islam and America. In Morocco, the response rate was 52%. According to the field agent the response rate was affected by the length of the questionnaire, which caused a certain drop rate. In some instances, people refused to take the survey as soon as the questions becoming more specific, especially questions related to Islam and terrorism, and there were some problems associated with local authorities especially in rural areas. The response rate was not given for
